The History of Halloween

The night of the 31st of October, which precedes All Saints' Day, is known as All-Hallow-Even (holy eve) or Hallowe'en. Although it is now considered a Christian festival, its origins go back to pagan times.

In the past, when people were much more superstitious than they are today, they used to believe that almost anything could happen on that day. They thought that during Halloween, witches rode across the sky on broomsticks, elves played jokes upon people, that the future could be foretold by jumping over a lighted candle, and various other magic rites took place. Even today some people still crack nuts, and bob for apples, throw apple peelings over their shoulder and look in a mirror with a lighted candle in order to see the face of their future spouse.
